I'm Back

Well I have been asked to foster again, and I said yes.

But of course it hasn't gone smoothly. I was given Holly and one of her 10 week old kittens to look after. Only they have been kept apart at the vets so when they were put together Holly kept attacking poor Noel.
So I had to set up the Puppy pen in the house for Noel, until I could take Mum to the Adoption centre. After taking Holly I went to fetch Noel's sister (Angel)who was finally caught, after living near a garage. I was hoping that they would be okay with each other but no they keep their distance from each other.
But poor Angel I removed 11 ticks from her last night, so will need to keep an eye out for more.

This is Holly

I can't seem to upload any photos so Hopefully you can see them Here

My not being a fosterer is nothing to do with the redunancies at the CP Adoption centre, I am a volunteer, all I can say is a clash of opinions and doing things the right way is too hard for some people. I am still volunteering at the Adoption centre but will no longer be having anything to do with the Derby and District Branch, you need to wear armour or at least watch your back!
I had hoped to continue fostering but it was decided that I was no longer needed.

Thursday, 27 September 2012

Sprocket, Rock and fraggle are now at the Derby Adoption Centre.
I have new fosters, four cute little kittens, I will upload a photo soon.

I am not sure if you are aware, but Cats Protection are doing redundancies, within CP, and in the Adoption centres, which my sister works in one.

I have to say as a volunteer that to lose staff in such a vital role is so daft and stupid really gets me angry, they expect volunteers to fill the roles, I have to say as a volunteer that has worked along side the paid staff it is not going to work you cannot have volunteers doing the exact same roles as paid workers. it is a disaster waiting to happen. Costs should be cut from admin not from those doing the most important work.
What if a volunteer decides they can't be bothered to go in that means the paid staff are overworked!
Also when they had the Derby AGM they already knew about these redundancies but still wasted all that cash on having such an elaborate venue which I know isn't cheap!
Okay rant over for now!

Friday, 24 August 2012

Sorry it has been so long since my last update, I have still have the three little kittens, who I have named Sprocket, Fraggle and Rock. They are growing nicely, still a little hissy, but we are getting there.

I have been busy, with the kids being off school(Summer Holidays) and managing to continue to do my volunteer roles.
This week I have taken up Alicia to the Adoption centre, her four Kittens are still at one of the fosterer's they are 16 weeks old, need to get them neutered then taken up to the A/C. I will be splitting them up though taking the boys, and then the girls who are still wary.
I have also taken a Ginger and White cat who was found to have a Microchip but the owner were untraceable, after the cat had been at the Vets for a few weeks after trying to find the owners, the cat is now also at the A/C.
And a Queen and her five kittens, two were kept by the people who found her the father is Russian Blue, and they have kept the two that are like him. So there were seven kittens altogether, one had to have an eye removed, poor thing they are all so cute though.

Rosie is now up at the A/C, all her kittens have been re homed.
Morris is still waiting for a new Home.

Thank you to I have three cats for the Sunshine Award. I will try and answerthe questions and post soon.

Alicia and her four are at another foster place, (not long before they will go to the adoption centre) as I have taken on three small kittens, they have diarrhoea and with them being long haired, well I am sure you can imagine the mess. I have been bathing them to remove the debris etc.
And brushing them to get used to being brushed.

They are approx 6 weeks, they are very malnourished and I hope to get them fattened up asap.

Update. 19/7/12

 Angus, Daisy(Bunty) and Dandy
All the kittens are now at the adoption centre, I took them last friday(13th) and I have been told they are okay. But unfortunately Rosie did not react kindly to the kittens not being there, she made lots of loud noises in the night on friday, so on Saturday I had to move her to another foster place, which is in the middle of nowhere with not very many close neighbours, she is doing okay she has been spayed and after her 1st vaccination will be also going up to the Adoption centre.
You may of noticed I put bunty in brackets, that is because there is already a Daisy so we had to re name her.

Morris is still at the adoption centre, the staff are trying to get in touch with the people who wanted him, but have just sent a letter as they are not answering their phone.
Meet Alicia
She is the cat waiting for the Felv test results.
She is such a sweet cat, I just had to name her.
I am still waiting for the results to come back
Tests results are back and they are negative

Here is the Blk/Wht Kitten
and the 3 Blk kittens below

They are very nervous, they have had no contact with people except me and the vets,
so are still very hissy! But the two boys are coming round, if the test results are okay then I hope to separate them to give the boys a chance to come on without copying their sisters hissy fits.
I have now got the two girls in a dog crate and hope to work on them

Please send good thoughts that the results are okay.
Results are Negative

Thank you

Source Cats Protection on Facebook
Following recent press articles suggesting that women who own cats are a suicide risk, Cats Protection would like to reassure worried cat owners that there is no need for concern.

A number of newspapers published a story earlier this week about a study that found that Danish mothers were more likely to have developed antibodies to the parasite Toxoplasma gondii if they self-harmed at a later date....

However, according to the NHS, this study ‘does not prove that T. gondii infection actually caused the women to self-harm. There may have been various mental health, medical, personal or social causes which this study has not explored. Furthermore, this study looked at the association between self-harm and women with antibodies against T. gondii rather than those who owned cats’.
Therefore, Cats Protection is keen to reassure cat owners that they need not worry and urge anyone interested in this issue to read the available NHS information here:

Background about Toxoplasma gondii
Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite that can cause toxoplasmosis, which is a common infection that occurs in most birds and mammals, including humans. It can be caught from handling raw meat, unwashed vegetables, contaminated water sources and cat faeces.

In most cases, toxoplasmosis does not cause any symptoms. However, pregnant women and people with weak immune systems need to take extra care to avoid becoming infected and advice about prevention can be found here:

Cat owners are statistically no more likely to get toxoplasmosis than non-cat owners and people are more likely to contract the disease from ingesting undercooked meat than from a cat.

I know I have been MIA but I have good reason, as well as taking on the Foster coordinator role for district Branch, I have also taken on the role of Purchaser at the Adoption centre for the Friends of Derby 'shop' and stalls. after being voted in at the AGM.
So have been ordering lots of new stock and will be going out today to the cash and carry to get more.
Although a lot of events have been cancelled due to the weather we have been having, we can always use more stuff to sell. And raising money is what we do!

The Mum and for kits are doing well, still no news!

Bye Bye Sweet things

Rosie and her brood are at another fosterers, they are only a couple of weeks from going to the centre, they will have lots of fun as it is a bigger pen than mine with ramps to climb.

I needed to jiggle the fosters around so I could take in a Mum and her 4 Kittens, She was snap tested and had a positive for FelV, so whilst we wait for further test results, I have them with me just in case it is positive. Also these are part of some field work I have been dealing with, and I was so relieved to finally catch them all, and get them safe, as they were living in someones garden.
I feel it important to post about this as being a fosterer is not all cute kittens and happy endings, if only this cat was neutered.....

But I want to end on a positive.

Morris has been reserved,Yay! I haven't much details, but someone wanted a black cat, and they were shown Morris, and he did me proud by being the lovely cat he is!

Kitten season

Since this is my first year doing active work with Cats Protection, I had no real idea of the problem when it come to un-neutered cats and Kittens.
Well I have had just a small insight into the waiting list and how many kittens are waiting to come into CP Care, lots are just dumped at vets or at the Adoption centre, and that is just our area!
Of course there are lots of fabulous people who are feeding and caring for the Mums and kittens in their gardens or homes  until we have a space for them, . They make our jobs that little bit easier.

Surely if you want a Cat you want to look after it and be a responsible pet owner, get your Cat Neutered, Microchipped and Vaccinated!!

Rosie's mouth is a lot better , and all the kittens are growing. Angus is now 1kg, the others are not far behind.

Rosie is very friendly, if I bend down to pick something up she jumps on my back and starts nuzzling my neck. Which is cute but when I am trying to clean up is not very helpful.

Busy, Busy.

I am busy at the moment, lots of Cats here ,there and everywhere trying to find places for them and trying to make spaces for them.

I never really knew what hard work the volunteers at the branch did, it isn't like volunteering for the adoption centre at all, it is so much more hard work. Not that I am saying they don't work hard as they do, they do a fabulous job.
I think because the branch do mainly the welfare work of fetching strays, cruelty cases and suchlike and you are reliant on the public for help and you can be rest assured there are those that make the work so much harder than it needs to be.
I have done my first bit of field work today, and I cannot say much about it except really use common sense, if you know someone is coming to collect a cat do not feed it, then let it out!! Okay Rant over.!

Rosie had a steriod injection last week, and her mouth is so much better, but now she is not eating! So I will have to take her to the vet if it continues. Kittens are all fine growing big now and up to lots of mischief!! Will post pic soon!
But you can see them on my keek HERE

Thanks for stopping by!!

The Chadd Big One!

Yes that is what the local carnival is called, The Big One!

We had a stall there as we have had for numerous years.
Here are two volunteers with Lorraine, before it got busy.
We were next to the Parrot Tent, Parrot Aid which always has lots of visitors.
We had visits from lots of dogs, and a Cat today, a gorgeous 12 week old Ragdoll, which was in it's owners Pet backpack. So I had a lovely cuddle!

This is part of a mural that was being painted today, On the side of the Cricket Pavilion.
I forgot to take a pic of it finished.
I was expecting rain, as I went over in wellies, had to get my daughter to bring over my shoes, and I got sunburnt ouch!

June is National Microchipping Month!!

I will alway remember the day that I found a dead cat in front of my front window, My husband had already left for work and I was taking my youngest to school when I saw a fluffy Black and White cat lying on the floor, I know that it seems daft now but I wasn't sure that it was dead.
Yes it was, So sad! I am assuming it had got hit by a car and managed to get as far as my garden, Yes I do live on a busy road, I am lucky that my cats are afraid of the main road, and if they ever manage to get around the front they do not venture down the driveway.
But anyway I rang my local Vets to ask them if they would take it in just in case it had a microchip and they could trace the poor cats owners.

Unfortunately it did not have a microchip, so I will never know what that Cat's name was, or if the owner ever found out what happened to their cat.
So sad it still upsets me!

I know when one of my cat's are missing over night I worry what, where etc, and I cannot rest until they are back safe and sound. And I hope if ever should something happen to my Cat, and that they are taken into a vets, I would know what happened.
I think it is sad when I hear that Cats go missing and the owners never find them. And considering how many end up as strays in the Adoption centre and are never claimed well surely they started somewhere.
My own three are all from the Adoption centre, Bella and Tango were 6 month and 5 months old strays, both friendly so they were not ferals, Lily was six weeks old when found I think she may of been feral as she is still a madam!

But I digress, the moral of today's post is Get your Pet Microchipped!!

If your pet is microchipped then make sure you keep the details up to date especially if you move house!

Purrfect Jubilee Celebration

Today I have been up to the Derby Adoption Centre for their Purrfect Jubilee Celebrations, with my Daughter.
There was lots of things for the kids to do. Raffle, Tombola, Welly wanging, Croquet, Hula hoop, Hops Scotch etc, lots of fabulous cakes baked by the W.I.

Here are some staff with their Jubilee Hat parade!

Jubilee Weekend

I hope everyone celebrating the Diamond Jubilee are staying dry, I hear Scotland had sunshine!
I must admit I did fall asleep whilst watching the Thames Pageant!

We have given our cats their monthly flea treatment today, and I must share what Tango looks like when I approach.

He struggles so much when he is being held and someone esle approaches, we got him when he was six months old, so we don't know his history before then as he was found as a stray. But he is a friendly cat normally.

Rosie and the kittens came back Monday, Rosie is slightly better her mouth is still poorly, I am just going to keep an eye on her and see how we go.
I can't believe how big they have got over two days away!
They are certainly fun little bundles at the moment. In to everything, every time I open the door they are there at my feet, either climbing on them or trying to bite my toes!

See the kittens now HERE ON KEEK

Mad Moggy Run

This is the second year that the Moggy bike run has taken place, and it was a glorious day for it.
Lots of riders/bikes came and paid £5 to take part, lots of them brought food for the cats which is fantastic.
The bikers were all lovely!
There was free drinks for all bikers taking part, Burgers/Hot dogs for sale, as well as a silent auction and Raffle( I won two prizes he he a meal for two and a felix blanket, luckily I could choose what I wanted from the table as most of it was bike related lol, I have never rode a motor bike!)

Poorly Rosie

I have taken Rosie and her kittens to the vets today, where they will stay until Monday, she is in pain at the moment, as she is lashing out, not doing any damage as such, but she will be better off as the Vets is nice and cool and I am struggling to keep the cabin cool, it is like a sauna in there.

So I am going to take the oppotunity to give the cabin a good clean out, it is hard to clean properly when the kittens are under foot!
I will keep you posting on how she is.

Purina One

Well all the food has gone and it is not quite three weeks, they liked it as they ate it all. Lily did look like she wanted more when I got tha packet out the cupboard. Would it make me buy it all the more... only if it is on offer, I must admit and be honest doing this trial has not changed my mind that it is the one and only dry food out there. As long as my cats eat something I will buy it, and it is not too expensive of course.

As you can see my cats have lovely shiny soft coats anyway, here is Miss Bella snoozing!

Friday, 25 May 2012

Well today I am fetching 4 cats from the vets and taking them up to Derby Adoption Centre, I have to take extra carriers, as I have only three belonging to CATS, I will take one of my own as well.

There are also four nine!! cats waiting to be taken to the vets, when they have been caught of course. and then after that they will be taken to one of the fosterers at the weekend hopefully, then we are full up again.

I am seriously thinking about having another pen, as we have a total of six pens between four of us. We need more fosterers also!

People really you need to get your Cat Spayed/Neutered,  it would help tremendously with the situation that we have all over the world not just the UK, with helping these cats.
Please be responsible Pet owners!

Crazy Heat

With the little heatwave we are having in the UK at the moment, I am finding it hard to keep my foster cats cool. The cabin is not the best for keeping cool, the temp was 30.5 c inside on tuesday, it is just a glorified shed, so it is not very well ventilated. So I have been using blankets and the garden parasol to shade the front of the cabin. I am re thinking the roof to the cat porch, clear plastic is going to make it worse.

I do have a thermometer in the cabin to let me know how hot it is in there, I have taken out one of my quietest fans to circulate the air in there for them.
If I am to have another pen, I would like one that has more mesh on the front and the side!

At four O'clock this morning Rosie was feeding the kittens in the main exercise area, must of been cooler there. I was up as two of my own cats have been staying out late, and not coming in, and I hate that they are not safe indoors when I am sleeping.

Do you have any ways to keep your cats cool? Please share

Wednesday, 23 May 2012

I am now Fosterer coordinator( voluntary) for Derby & District Branch, I also get the van... cool!! just means I will be doing more vet runs, deliveries etc.
I had my first day (sort of) I now will be doing the admin as well. So I may post even less, but I will try and come by post updates.

I am looking forward to this role, and all it entails.

Just some info for anyone nearby

Purina ONE

I have been feeding my three cats the Purina ONE, and I must say I am actually amazed that they took to it,  Lily's fur is  glossy and soft anyway, She is more of a dry food eater though and will see more benefit if any.
I must admit I did not think that it would make any difference.
Especially on Bella who is out most of the time she comes in to sleep and eat. Her Coat has a shiny look to it, but she doesn't eat dry food as much, she prefers her wet food.
It is still early days, but it won't be a three week challenge as I have three cats and there is no way two bags will last three weeks. I started to feed them this on the 10th May and it has only been five days so plenty of time to be able to do a proper review at a later date.

Although what do I really need to say in a review, I cannot say it tastes nice as there is no way I am tasting them LOL,
Yes, the cats are eating them.

They also eat Felix Cat food, but we do have to change it once in a while as they do go off it.

So would I recommend Purina ONE, Yes as my cats are eating it!

Training in Lichfield

For Cat Care Modules ~
Pregnancy, Neonatal and Hand rearing.
Infectious Diseases, disease control and health checking.
These will be what I will be learning about whilst away on my course. I am looking forward to them and I hope to learn a lot especially from the first as it is relevant to the current fosters.
And also to meet other fosterers with Cats Protection.
